KnowEm? Review: Find Your Company Name
Sharing is caring!
Editor’s Note: This post was updated 9/2017.
You’ve found the perfect domain name. You sell everything kitten hoodies, and kittenhoodies.com just happens to be available. You’re practically on your way to printing money!
But wait! There’s already a Facebook account (and corresponding Facebook store) called KittenHoodies. And a Twitter handle. And an Instagram account. And a Pinterest account…
Arrrgh. You’ve already spent weeks (and thousands of bucks) developing your perfect ecommerce store, and now you’re stuck with a vastly diluted social presence. Your ecommerce store is kittenhoodies.com, but on Facebook, you are Hoodies for Kittens, and on eBay, you’re Kittens in Hoodies! Not to mention the muddied convolutions you’ll have to adopt on hundreds of other business, social, blogging, video, and information sites.
How could you have known?
You could have used KnowEm?
How KnowEm? Works
In the simplest terms, KnowEm? is a social media username lookup. But KnowEm? goes beyond just social media and searches a company name across 500 different sites a company and person can sign up for. It’s a wide-ranging check to see if a company name is taken. The sites it covers range across 15 categories, including:
You don’t even have to sign up for an account to use KnowEm? to check business name availability in hundreds of social media sites, video sites, and other sites. Just visit KnowEm.com and type in your business name. It’s that easy. KnowEm? will respond with a (very fast) check of the top 25 most popular social networks, and whether your business name is available or not, like this:
What Sites Does KnowEm? Check?
The short answer is that KnowEm? will check a company username across just about every site you can think of. The list is over 500 sites long and includes social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram, but also blogging sites like WordPress, Blogger, and LiveJournal, as well as lesser-known (but possibly up and coming) sites like Boonex, 3tags, and StyleBistro.
Here’s a short list of the top 15 most well-known social media, business, video, and other sites that KnowEm checks:
KnowEm? not only works, but it works very fast. The interface keeps you from having to look at results in all 500+ social sites if you don’t want to. For instance, say you’re an ecommerce store selling kitten apparel and you don’t care about sites in the travel category.
Since all the different types of sites are grouped, you can just look at results in the categories you care about.
First, you’ll check your potential company name on the main page. That’ll check domain name availability and check the top 25 social media sites to see if the business name is available there.
That’s an incredibly handy and time-saving one-stop company name check.
Next, you can click through to the “search over 500 more social networks” area to check multiple categories. Just click the “check this category” button next to any category heading, and you’re off to the races. KnowEm takes just a few seconds to check dozens of social sites per category.
One drawback to KnowEm is that (fairly infrequently) it delivers an “Oops, Error!” response instead of an “Available” response to a certain site name.
Beyond Just Knowing
Beyond just checking company name availability across hundreds of social sites, KnowEm? will also sign your company up for them automatically—for a price. KnowEm? packages start at $84.95 for automatic social network signup on 25 sites, and max out at $649 for auto-signup on 300 sites.
With the robust and comprehensive KnowEm company name checker available for free, why would anyone pay for a premium plan? Here’s an outline of what you get with the various KnowEm pricing plans.
- Free: The KnowEm? free plan doesn’t even require you to create an account. Anyone can just visit KnowEm.com and start testing company names and brands. If you like, you can create a free profile that tracks your social media presence.
- $84.95 Personal Essential: The KnowEm? Personal Essential plan signs you up automatically to the top 25 most essential, most popular social media sites. That includes a bio, photos, link to your URL, and company description.
- $249 Business Starter: KnowEm?’s Business Starter plan signs you up on 100 social media sites with a bio, photos, URL, and company description.
- $349 Corporate Starter: This KnowEm? plan does the same as the above plans, but signs your company up on 150 social media sites.
- $649 Corporate Complete: At this level, KnowEm? users get signed up for 300 social media sites automatically.
Does KnowEm Really Work?
KnowEm? really does work. It’s a lightning fast way to check a company name and brand across hundreds of social networks. It also works as a domain name checker and finder. Finally, there’s even a trademark search tool that comes complete with a link to register your trademark (for a fee).
At the most basic level, KnowEm is an easy-to-use way to claim your brand at the start of your business, to avoid sticky problems competing for social media space.
The domain name checker does leave a little bit to be desired.
It will check a domain name against .com, .org, and other domains across multiple countries, but it’s not as thorough as other tools like domainsbot.com , that not only look for what you typed in but also suggest dozens of variations with similar keywords.
There are a few alternatives to KnowEm? out there. All of them will check a company name’s availability on social media and other signup-style sites across the web.
Namechk.com gives a graphical representation of whether a company name is available. In the image below, green means the name hasn’t been taken yet. Black means something went wrong. The check is fast and accurate and also includes a domain name search, though it doesn’t include as many sites checked as KnowEm?
Namecheckr.com also displays results graphically, though in this case, it checks even fewer social sites for availability (53 sites total).
UnitedDomains.com also offers a free domain and social media availability checker, but it requires users to create an account before it will work. While that may not seem like such a big hassle, compared to KnowEm? and the other sites mentioned above that don’t require signup, why spend the time?
Claim.io will automatically sign up a business for 300 social media networks, just like KnowEm? However, there’s no free checker option to check brand and name availability before you drop down for their $189 Business Package.
